Back in the 1960’s my Grand father worked at Broad Ripple Park – he was a retired steam engine mechanic for the railroad and he would spend afternoons sitting at the park show kids around the Nickel Plate Railroad locomotive that was there in the park. His name was Howard Strang. You you have any information or pictures of the locomotive any where?

Nice story, Tom — your grandfather obviously was a good person. I remember that #587 locomotive quite well.

I do not have any photos of the locomotive but Alan Hague likely does. He is the publisher and editor of the Broad Ripple Gazette and BroadRippleHistory.com. He has a treasure trove of old photos and he may have information about your grandfather. In any case, he would welcome more information, for sure. I suggest you contact him.

I hope that helps. Let me know if I can do anything else.
